Description: This is a SIGNED galley copy of NOFX's 2016 biography NOFX: The Hepatitis Bathtub and Other Stories. It is also a one-of-a-kind piece of punk rock and music publishing history. This copy of the band's autobiography contains the uncorrected page proofs of the book—a pre-final, pre-copyedit pass of the manuscript. It has also been signed by each member of NOFX (Michael "Fat Mike" Burkett (see also: "Cokie the Clown"), Aaron "El Hefe" Abeyta, Erik "Smelly" Sandin, and Eric Melvin), arranged by an event staff member (the seller and single owner). Read on for a bit of background about this awesome music history relic: Galleys (or ARCs - "advance reading copies") are mock-copies of a book that are printed prior to official publication to garner media coverage for a book launch, and are largely destroyed upon the book's publication, or when media professionals reject or complete a pitch related to the book. They are inherently a limited printing, with smaller publishers often producing only 50-200 copies of a give galley. They contain a number of features to distinguish them from the finished retail book product, including a violator on the front cover, which in this case reads 'Advance Reading Copy - Not for Sale', a placeholder back cover featuring publicity and marketing campaign and contact information, and a qualifier that the book as presented is in a pre-final state, has not been copy edited, and may change before it is officially printed. The publisher of the book, Da Capo Press, is no longer in operation, but was founded in Boston in1964 and had a noted history as a publisher of music books, eventually expanding into other non-fiction publishing. This was one of the publisher's last music titles in a long history of independent music publishing. Perseus Books Group, a collection of independent publishers to which Da Capo Press belonged, was purchased by the Hachette Book Group in 2016 closely following the publication of NOFX's book. Da Capo Press was later eliminated as a publishing brand, and its historic publishing list was placed under the care of HBG's Hachette Books division in 2018. This particular galley copy of the book remained in the publisher's office following the book's 2015-2016 media campaign. One of many books on a "take away" shelf, but the only "copy" of this particular book, it was picked up by the most unlikely creature imaginable—an intern, future eBay name of TCGMemory. Me! I am a fan of the band and was excited to read their book, which had just released (on 4/12/16) at the time I picked up this straggling galley copy. I was also one of four or five Boston-based publishing staff present at the band's book signing promoting the book at the Harvard Book Store on April 28, 2016, prior to their show at the Paradise Rock Club. Who better than an enthusiastic intern (read: a fan of the band who begged to tag along) to lug around cartons of books and keep the signature line moving? Prior to the event, the band signed stock of the real book for the evening's ticket holders in the basement of the store. This galley copy was added to their pile of books to sign. Mike even remarked "this copy is weird" (momentarily stopping my heart as I abandoned any thoughts of a future in book publishing) which, you'll see, it is! It has a different (glossy) finish than the finished (matte) paperback book. So, while I cannot definitively say that no single member of the media (of the limited list who received advanced copies) held on to their galley copy (of which they receive mountains from book publicists seeking media coverage, so they get binned quickly and replaced with finished copies), held on to it for months (see the previous parenthetical), saw the band was doing a show or a book signing (there weren't many, look it up), brought their galley to that event (most of which require you to buy a finished book as a ticket to get in), and managed to get it signed (most book signings, especially for musicians, don't allow outside merch to be brought and signed - it holds up the line and suppresses sales)—I can say that it is extremely unlikely, and some community research hasn't yielded anyone else holding one of these. I can confirm that I am the only publishing staff member in possession of a signed galley. As a fan of the band and a music book publishing professional, I feel that it is reasonable and that I am qualified to describe this item as one-of-a-kind. Seeing the band hanging up the (very moist) towel, I am at a point in my life where I think I am ready to part with this treasured collectible. I am open to direct contact and can verify my identity and the origin story above. May this unique encapsulation of the band's stories go to a good home!
