January 1892 in Stuttgart and died on 26. April 1963 in Gerlingen. After graduating from the Dillmann-Gymnasium in 1909, he began his studies at the Stuttgart School of Arts and Crafts, where he studied under Alois Kolb, among others. Two years later, he moved to various German cities to gain his first professional experience, including Leipzig and the Gewerbemuseum in Kaiserslautern. After his return to Stuttgart, Frank had already made a name for himself as a poster artist, advertising designer and illustrator. He then traveled through Eastern Europe, the Nordic countries, France and Italy. He processed the impressions and experiences of these trips in his paintings and drawings, which he often supplemented with his own texts. He created numerous drawings and caricatures for the humorous weekly magazine “Fliegende Blätter”. After the First World War, Hugo Frank moved to Berlin, but returned to near his hometown of Stuttgart in 1932. As a graphic artist, he also designed postage stamps. For Württemberg, he designed the special coat of arms edition published in 1916 to mark the 25th anniversary of the reign of King Wilhelm II and probably also the edition with the king's portrait, although the "Michel Catalogue" names "Franck" as the designer, which may be a misprint.
