Maxfield Parrish’s Old King Cole is one of his best-known and most beloved works, notable for its whimsical subject matter and striking visual style. Created in 1906 for the bar of the Knickerbocker Hotel in New York City, the mural depicts the popular nursery rhyme character Old King Cole in a lavish, playful scene. In the painting, the king is shown with a broad, jolly grin, seated on a throne, flanked by his "fiddlers three" in colorful, almost theatrical costumes. The entire scene has a sense of grandeur mixed with humor, appealing to adults and children alike.Parrish used his signature style, combining luminous colors, intricate details, and playful themes, to bring Old King Cole to life. One of the secrets behind the vibrant colors in his work was his use of glazing—a technique where he layered transparent colors over a white base, creating a glow that makes the painting seem almost lit from within. The rich blues, in particular, became known as "Parrish Blue," a hallmark of his work.Though the original mural remained at the Knickerbocker until the hotel closed in 1920, the mural was later moved to the St. Regis Hotel, where it still resides today. The artwork has not only become a lasting piece of Parrish’s legacy but also a unique part of New York's cultural and artistic history. Dodge Publishing was one of the major publishers that helped popularize Parrish's work in the early 20th century, making affordable art prints of his illustrations available to the public. Prints of Old King Cole were widely distributed, contributing to Parrish’s reputation and bringing his vibrant, whimsical style into homes across the United States. These prints are now considered collectible items, especially in good condition, as they capture the charm and detail of Parrish’s work on a smaller scale.
