Description: Circa 1933 Goetze's "Wrapped Kisses" Display Box with R52 Flags of the Nation Cards! This is the ONLY KNOWN Example. Truly a one-of-a-kind piece that deserves a museum worthy collection. Display box of Goetze's "Wrapped Kisses," issued during the 1930s by the Baltimore Chewing Gum Company of Baltimore, Maryland, containing twenty original complete cardboard cartons of candy. The box originally housed twenty-four candy cartons. This rare, heretofore unknown, display box with original contents originates from the historic find of 1930s nonsports gum boxes featured in the Robert Edwards 2009 auction ("The Greatest Unopened Find In The History of the Universe"). The consignor overlooked this box at the time, because he did not realize it had any connection to cards, but after peeking in the boxes, he found that cards were included in two boxes; hence its inclusion here one year later. As noted in print directly on the cover of the display box, each individual candy carton contains Five Goetze's caramel creams, one tablet of All Star Gum and either a toy balloon or novelty. The contents, including gum and a variety of novelties (including Sun Pictures self-developing issue packs, which are very "card-like"), are included in each box; the novelties in two of the cartons, however, are identical R52 Flags of the Nation cards (No. 33 Paraguay). This discovery is particularly important to nonsports collectors because it solves a decades-old mystery regarding these cards. According to Christopher Benjamin, author of the definitive work The Sport Americana Price Guide to the Non-Sports Cards 1930-1960, Flags of the Nations cards were distributed in Flag Gum. Benjamin probably made that assumption based upon the printing on the back of each card, which reads "Flags of the Nations - This is one of fifty cards in the Flag Gum," because he later notes that "no wrapper has been seen to date." It appears that the reason no Flag Gum wrapper has ever been found is simply because it never existed! As the contents of this box clearly shows, Flags of the Nations cards were distributed not in individual gum packages as originally assumed, but instead were issued in the offered Baltimore Chewing Gum candy cartons. Each candy carton (4.5 x 3 x 1.25 inches) appears just as it did when originally issued. The display box (9.5 x 12.5 x 4 inches) is darkly toned, with a chip in one side flap (the missing piece is present with the box) and a few small tears along the edges.
