Perry 1794 - 1858': The American naval officer who helped found Liberia, and later commanded the African Squadron of the U. S. Navy which hunted slave traders and protected the American colonist against attack by the natives. He fought in the War of 1812. In the war with Mexico, he captured Veracruz. He fought pirates in the West Indies. The climax of Perry's career came when he headed the Japanese Expedition of 1853-43. He executed his mission of "opening" Japan without firing a hostile shot.
