Michel. While tragic, his death appears to be accidental—until an old human skeleton is discovered the next day beneath the floor of the ancient du Rocher chateau. Luckily, American forensic anthropologist, Gideon Oliver—better known as the ‘Skeleton Detective’—happens to be lecturing at a conference nearby, and is called upon to examine the remains. Based on his findings, the police conclude the skeleton is that of a Nazi officer murdered during the Occupation. But doubts nag at Oliver, and when a second pile of bones is found—and a member of the du Rocher is poisoned with cyanide—he starts to suspect that the deaths may be connected. Yet he wonders: What could a fifty-year-old skeleton, a drowning, and a death by poison have in common? Determined to find answers, Oliver continues to investigate. But when someone threatens his life, he becomes convinced of a frightening fact: Someone is determined to keep the secrets of the past buried—and they’re willing to murder to do so. Old Bones is an award-winning classic from the father of the modern forensic mystery. AARON ELKINS was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1935. He received his bachelor’s degree from Hunter College in New York City, becoming one of the first men to matriculate the former women’s college. Elkins went on to study anthropology at the University of Wisconsin, where he completed the course work for a Ph.D. but never finished his dissertation. That didn’t keep him from earning two master’s degrees from the University of Arizona and California State University, however, as well as a doctorate in education from the University of California at Berkeley. Before tuning to writing in his early forties, Elkins worked as a professor at several universities. He taught anthropology to soldiers overseas through a University of Maryland program, a gig which inspired the setup for his first book, Fellowship of Fear. The novel helped kickstart the modern forensic mystery genre when it was published in 1982. In addition to the Gideon Oliver series, Elkins has penned a series of art mysteries, several stand-alone thrillers, and collaborated with his wife, Charlotte on two mystery series. The pair won a joint Agatha Award for best short story in 1992, and Old Bones won the Edgar Award for best novel in 1986 from the Mystery Writers of America.” For the mystery reader enthusiast, Old Bones by Aaron Elkins is a mystery you won’t want to miss.
