Description: Original oil painting by California Impressionist painter Alfred James Dewey (1874-1958) . This oil on hardboard is a Southern California hill landscape, beautifully painted with a glaze technique that makes it almost an abstract work. It is signed by artist at bottom right and measures approx. 14 x 17 inches, with frame it is 16 1/2 x 19 1/2 inches. The frame is likely the original, a period bronze leaf frame with a label from the Linder's Art Shop in Long Beach, this establishment was run by another California artist, David Robert Linder (1884-1950). The frame shows typical scuffs and scrapes, but looks good overall. Painting is in excellent condition. Alfred James Dewey (1874-1958) was an American painter, illustrator, etcher, and sculptor. Born in Tioga, PA where he was educated in the public schools, Dewey later studied at the Philadelphia School of Industrial Art and with Wm M. Chase in NYC. During his career he worked as a newspaper cartoonist, wrote several novels, and contributed illustrations to Life, Judge, Harpers, and Century magazines. In 1924, Dewey settled just east of Los Angeles in the hills of Sierra Madre, CA. There he founded the Old Adobe Art School in 1936 and the Sierra Madre Arts Guild in 1938. Dewey painted California landscapes and is among the “Plein Aire” or open air painters in the Impressionistic style. He also designed many of the floats for the Pasadena Rose Tournament. Dewey died in Sierra Madre on July 14, 1958. Exh: Artists Fiesta (LA), 1931. In: Sierra Madre City Hall. AAW; WWC 1942; LA Times, 7-15-1958
