Description: Product Listing - Ohara Koson Art Collection Product Description ●This is the first full-scale collection of works in Japan to provide a comprehensive overview of the artistic career of Ohara Koson, the “unknown artist” who left behind hundreds of flower and bird prints from the late Meiji period to the early Showa period and who was particularly popular overseas. A total of 345 illustrations of his works are featured. This is a valuable collection that also includes valuable sketches and preliminary drawings. ●This book features all of Koson's works from the Hara Yasusaburo Collection, which attracted attention at the “Ohara Koson Exhibition” held at the Chigasaki City Museum of Art in the fall of 2018. It also includes works that were not exhibited at the exhibition. ●This book also features many works from the “Shoson” and “Toson” periods, when his style changed dramatically. In particular, all 50 large-format works bearing Shoson's signature are included. ●The delicate background tones of “Koson” works and the vivid colors of “Shoson” and “Toson” works are reproduced as much as possible with beautiful printing. You can fully enjoy the charm of his works, which perfectly combine the techniques and traditions of woodblock prints since ukiyo-e with the advantages of Western art. About the Author Born in 1877 (Meiji 10) in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. In the late Meiji period, he produced flower and bird prints for the publisher Daikokuya that were indistinguishable from Japanese paintings, and became extremely popular, especially overseas. From the Taisho to Showa periods, he changed his pen name to "Shoson" and "Hoson," and produced a series of "modern" flower and bird prints incorporating vibrant colors and progressive woodblock techniques, attracting attention. He passed away in 1945 (Showa 20) at the age of 68. Because he was highly popular overseas during his lifetime, there are not many of his works remaining in Japan, and he was literally an "unknown artist."
