Description: O&EG Royal Austria 14 3/8" Oval Handled Tray Hand Painted Violets Gold 1899-1918 Elegant Decorative 14 3/8" by 4 15/16" OVAL TRAY w/2 Reticulated Handles Handpainted by Artist H.A.H. manufactured by O&EG (Royal Austria Oscar & Edgar Gutherz) in Altrolau, Bohemia, Austria, Purple Violets w/Leaves, Wide Solid GOLD on Smooth Rim & Handles, circa 1899-1918 DESCRIPTION: This tray was skillfully hand painted by the artist, H.A.H. The design includes purple violets with yellow centers and green leaves. The tray has the most interesting hand drawn scrollwork connecting the violet sprays and separating the yellow center wash from the light blue wash encircling the bottom of the tray. The overall quality of the design is quite professional. The gold trim on the rim & handles is very rich looking and accents the smooth rim. CONDITION: While this tray is classified as used, its condition is superb. We can find no defects and only one very minor bit of damage. On the back tip of one handle, there is a very shallow small flake on the outermost tip of the handle. This can only be felt and seen if looking very hard for it. Otherwise, there are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. Overall, the gold trim is solid & glossy. See the photos. DIMENSIONS: The tray has a length of 14 3/8" and a width of 4 15/16". The tray's height is 5/8" but on the ends the handles rise up to 1 1/2". HISTORY/MARKS: Maximilian Marx and Oscar Gutherz established a porcelain decorating factory along the Rohlau Creek in Altrohlau around 1884. Interestingly, the business was financed by Lazarus Straus ( of LS&S, Lazaras Straus & Sons, New York Importer) who was Oscar’s father-in-law. The firm initially decorated porcelain from other factories, but later produced their own porcelain. In 1898 Oscar’s brother, Edgar, purchased Marx’s share of the business. The business continued to expand and in 1918 became part of OEPIAG towards the end of WWI. The mark on this tray was in use from 1899-1918 and is mark #558 in Robert E.
