Contemporary Counterfeit / Spurious A product which imitated a legitimate note issued by a bank and which circulated in the same time frame as genuine notes. As the ultimate example of Gresham's "Bad money drives out good", counterfeits are often the only surviving examples of a particular issue. Bankers refused to redeem counterfeits which ended up as lessons for the unwary and unlucky. Genuine notes were redeemed and destroyed. The counterfeits survived for us to collect.
