Description: Novae insulae [The New World - The Americas]Antique 16th century woodcut map, 1572Caption below picture: 'Novae insulae [The New World - The Americas]' The 1572 edition of Sebastian Munster's map of the Americas, the earliest map to show all of the continents of North and South America, and the first to name the Pacific Ocean (Mare Pacificum). The so-called Sea of Verrazzano is shown - the Pacific cuts deeply into North America, narrowing its width to a narrow isthmus separating it from the Atlantic, the result of Verrazzano mistaking the waters inside Carolina Outer Banks, as the Pacific. The flag of Castille and Leon flag is planted in Puerto Rico, here named Scian. The Straits of Magellan are shown, along with Magellan's ship Victoria in the Pacific. This is the first map to include Japan (Zipangri); the first edition of this map predated European contact. The Yucatan Peninsula is shown as an Island. The map depicts cannibal activity in South America. "Terra Florida" is named. Jamaica, Cozumel, Cuba, Hispaniola, Dominica and the Antilles are marked. "Cathay" or China is shown at the extreme west of the map. At the western edge of the map is Calensuan, which is spelled as Callenzuan on Waldseemllers 1507 world map and Calensuan on Juan Vespuccis 1524 world map; the origin of this island is unknown, but it may too be a corruption of Ceylon, or Sri Lanka.DATE PRINTED: 1572 IMAGE SIZE: Approx 28.5 x 37.5cm, 11.25 x 14.75 inches (Large); Please note that this is a folding map.ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Sebastian Mnster PROVENANCE: "Cosmographiae Universalis Lib VI.
