Description: Northwest Coast STYLE Red Sun Mask Carved Wood Horsehair LARGE PNW This stunning carved and painted wood mask comes from the estate of a man who was a passionate collector of all things Northwest Coast and Northwest Coast-inspired. To my knowledge, he acquired it within the last 40 years. This piece is unsigned and there is no indication of where it was made, but its level of skill indicates that it was created by someone who wanted to honor Native/Indigenous/First Nations people and their culture. THIS MASK WAS NOT CREATED BY A NATIVE ARTISAN AS FAR AS I KNOW. I can't find many other examples of this particular mask. Online I have found similar pieces created by Tsimshian or Nisga'a artisans. I believe this is some kind of sun mask. It measures 22" wide and 19" tall. It has a hook and string on the back to hang on a wall. CONDITION: Vintage used condition. Overall the horsehair looks good and the wood appears to be in decent condition. It's a little dusty; I will let you decide how you'd like to clean it. There is a crack on the bottom right that is visible in bright light but doesn't affect presentation. There is one area of pain loss on the nose. There are evident glued-together areas.
