Description: For sale is a Northwest Coast watercolor by Ben Houstie titled Moon. It is 11 X 15 inches on heavy deckle edge “Arches France” premium quality watercolor paper. In Northwest Coast art seals represent wealth and plenty. Seals were traditionally a important resource providing food, oil, and tough waterproof hides all of which could be used in everyday life. Ben Houstie was born November 20, 1960 in Bella Bella, British Columbia, Canada. This area is representative of the Kwagiulth Nation, a tribe that inhabits the southern region of British Columbia. His uncle is Gordon Gladstone and great-great-grandfather is Daniel Houstie. Ben specializes in original paintings, limited edition prints, rattles and some jewelry. In 1988, Ben apprenticed under Bill Reid, the father of Northwest Coast art of the twentieth century, painting several drums of Bill's design and twenty paddles for the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Ottawa. Presently, Ben resides in Vancouver and continues to make original paintings and limited edition prints. It is signed in pencil "Moon 1989 Ben Houstie”.
