Fishing for trout and salmon, and the other game species - by turns elusive, aggressive, calculating or plain bored-demands the skills of each of these specialists. John Buckland's North American Game Fishing derives its authority from a unique combination of knowledge and practice drawn from each of the three spheres. As a lifelong game fisherman, a former conservation worker and a dedicated amateur naturalist, the author is unusually well qualified to lay bare the secrets of successful game fishing in North America. His basic premise is that you can never gain too deep an understanding of the biology, behavior and habitat of the game species. He believes too that while the ability to cast a fly accurately is indispensable, other aspects of tackle need not concern the fisherman as much as is commonly held. At the heart of John Buckland's emphasis on understanding the fish lies the importance of relating the fly, lure, or other bait to the quarry's habits and to the immediate habitat and weather conditions. In short, to not know which fly or lure to present or why you are using a particular pattern is to deprive yourself of half the pleasure of game fishing, and inevitably of success too. There is a golden thread in fishing when all comes right - the river or lake is the wild and unspoiled landscape of your dreams, there is that kindness of sun and cloud that is a blessing on the human race, and the fish are there, cautious but brave. susceptible to skill. The challenge, the mystery, the satisfaction are all present. Fishing is the ultimate leisure pursuit: solitary or companionable; competitive orlazy. An obsession it may be, but it provides both mental and physical therapy, and the greater the skill applied and the more interesting the method used, the greater the stimulus and enjoyment. It is a great mistake to elevate fishing to the status of an art, which gives it an undeserved mystique, for it is an easily acquired skill which even in its early stages of proficiency produces results. Although flshing is, world-wide, one of the most popular of outdoor sports, the idea that the fisher must be an 'expert' frightens him into leapfrogging some of the simple homework which would make him even more successful. He needs to know the lifestyle of the fish - how they live, feed, breed and protect themselves - the waters they live in; the food forms; and what stimulates them to take. If he knows nothing of his quarry's senses, which both protect it and lead to its downfall, his fishing will be haphazard and his catches less. It is not necessary for the fisher to know by heart the Latin names of the first forty insects likely to be in a trout's diet in May; practical field observation - his own and that of others - will tell him what food forms are in abundance. If he can recognize a swimming nymph from a crawling nymph, he can choose a more accurate imitation and fish it in a way that is as close to nature as possible. He is already an entomologist, storing the information for future use; and it was as simple as inspecting the surface of the water and the bankside vegetation. If he chose to cut open a fish rather than release it, an examination of its stomach contents would confirm (or confound) his observation. He had found his fish just there, where a cold spring welled up through the river bed: he is now in addition both ecologist and ichthyologist, for he knows that in rivers certain fish thrive best at certain temperatures. In the heat of early summer it is his knowledge of the river bed and fish behavior that has given him his catch. There is no art to this; nor to casting. The latter is an ability, a proficiency which, when well executed, admittedly looks 'artistic.' But, though it is best learned through person-to-person coaching, this skill can be gained from videos or books. Without reasonable proficiency, however, both enjoyment and success are much reduced. Some techniques must be learned; for example, to be able to choose when to fish on the surface, in the surface or below the surface needs a combination of dexterity, observation and experience. Even so, as soon as he can cast adequately, the game fisher is in with some chance. The angler who learns to curb his impatience catches more and better fish, for he knows the old adage. It only takes one cast to catch a trout. He also knows that a trout (or other game fish) is too valuable to be caught only once, and is fully aware of the enormous pressures placed on rivers and lakes both by large-scale pollution and thoughtless individuals. His concern for the environment and his love of fishing will make him do his best to ensule the survival of both for later generations. CONTENTS: 1.
