Description: Norfolk Virginia VA Postcard RPPC Photo C.1910”s Historical image The German Village was a collection of small houses built by German sailors on the waterfront of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Virginia during WWI The German sailors built the village after being confined to their ships and the shoreline due to the German U-boat attacks and the escape of the Eclipse. The sailors collected scrap metal and built the houses, which had picket fences and window curtains. They also tended to the animals they had taken from ships they had sunk. The village became a popular tourist destination before the U.S. entered the war. The postcard captures the essence of the era and portrays the ingenuity of these German sailors. These postcards were made by the German sailors and sold to support the German Red Cross. Excellent condition
