nice Woodcock Sheffield England 1/2" wood gouge or carving tool tang style

Description: You are bidding on one Woodcock tang style wood gouge as pictured. It is marked on the neck with "F WOODCOCK SHEFFIELD" and a small logo. Width of the blade at the sharp end, measured tip to tip, is about a 32nd under 1/2". Measured farthest outside edge to farthest outside edge up a little from the sharp edge yields a width of about 9/16". Overall length of the gouge including the blade and handle is about 10-9/16". Length of the blade from the sharp edge to where it starts to narrow down to the neck is about 4". It weighs only 3.5 ounces on my postal scale.There were a series of Woodcock edge tool businesses in Sheffield beginning with Ward & Woodcock in 1859, then Woodcock (beginning about 1862), Woodcock & Sons (beginning in 1879), Thomas Woodcock & Sons (beginning in 1907), Woodcock Sons & Company (beginning about 1922), F Woodcock & Sons Tools Ltd (beginning in 1935), and finally either F Woodcock or Woodcock Sons & Company (from 1938 until 1957). Condition of the blade is very good, with a little patina (color), a couple of tiny spots of rust, and no pitting. Condition of the handle is also very good with a clear coating on it, and very light wear on the struck end. The Post Office now has several prices increases during each year, raising a few things but not everything at each increase. And they now raise their rates during the Holidays, which means early October to late January. Their big increases are in January, timed to start at the end of the Holiday rates, and this year is no exception. And it's not just the postage rates, the insurance charges and the delivery signature charges have also gone up. There is now a surcharge for Priority Mail packages over 20" long, and another for Priority Mail packages over 30" long, because those longer packages won't fit in their automatic machines. And the Post Office has discontinued the Regional Flat Rate boxes, which were often less expensive for certain sizes and weights. I try to pick the best shipping option for each listing, based both on what is the least expensive and on what I think is needed to protect the item. If the value is $250 or over, eBay requires your signature at delivery for the buyer and seller protections to be in effect.SALES TAX: Interstate sales tax is now the reality on all the major selling websites including eBay. If I ship to a state where eBay is required to collect sales tax, eBay will charge you the sales tax for your location.
