The not-quite-scarlet orange was equally divided by silvery pin-stripes reminiscent of the era’s Raymond Loewy Kleenex pop-up box graphic design. The design was nicely contrasted by the ornate full NYNH&H scroll-like hand-lettering on the loco’s nose. The FAs went through several new paint designs before the Penn Central in- herited them, painted over the New Haven logos and slapped their million dollar “worms in love” logo stencils with large white road num- bers on the Alcos.
