Cambridge Glass 1818 to 1888 by Lura Woodside Watkins CAMBRIDGE GLASS is the story of the New England Glass Company of Cambridge, Massachusetts, which ran from 1818 to 1888. Although this company is less well known than the Sandwich works, it was at one time the largest glasshouse in the world. Its products were fine blown and cut ware and every type of engraved and decorated glass known in the Victorian era. Its colored glass, especially ruby, was famous. This book is based on research done by visiting some thirty families whose relatives had been connected with the works, and by studying early newspapers, land records and other documents. By unearthing this information, the author was able to give the New England Glass Company the credit due it for much of our finest early glass and to write an authentic history of an industry once so important. In the years since its first publication, this book has filled the collector's needs and its statements have stood the test of later researches.
