In AD 51 young Nero was elevated to princeps iuventutis. The Roman knights didn't miss the opportunity to donate a buckler and some silver lances to him. These objects are shown by this medallion that repeats a similar motif on coins minted for C. and L. Caesar in the time of Augustus. The medallion (not a sesterce, as it doesn't have S C) was probably minted in Rome by order and for account of the Roman knights and given away by them on the occasion of a feast in honour of Nero (cf. RIC). Nothing speaks in favor for von Kaenel's opinion that this medallion was minted in Thracia or another place in the Balkans (Reference: Britannicus, Agrippina Minor und Nero in Thrakien, SNR 63, 1984, 127-166). ______________________________
