Articles include Bill Belton’s “The Indian Heritage of Crispus Attucks,” Polly Pope’s “A Maroon Settlement on St. Croix” exploring a self-sustained maroon community, and Reuben Garner’s “Responses of Colonial Inspectors to Slavery and the Slave Trade, 1815–1849,” examining colonial views on the Atlantic slave trade. Patrick L. Simpkins contributed “North Carolina Quakers and Blacks: Education and Membership,” analyzing interactions between Quakers and African Americans in North Carolina, while Elizabeth F. Chittenden offered “Black Missionary to White Vermont,” detailing the experience of an African American missionary in predominantly white Vermont. Also included are poems, such as Octave Lilly, Jr.’s “I Am Crispus Attucks” and Lillie Mae Carter’s “Who,” both capturing themes of identity and resistance in verse.
