Description: Here offered is a fairly rich gold ore specimen from the Charlotte District in Mecklenburg County. During the 1800s to early 1900s, there were over 100 active and productive gold mines within the district but now, the vast majority are covered under urban sprawl. The specimens show very well the geology of the mine and what the high-grade gold ore looked like that was mined. The best and richest gold ore tended to occur near the boundaries of the vein where the quartz veins met the host rock. Unlike many other gold mines even in NC, the large chunks of quartz were mostly barren and quite low-grade. Near to where the blue arrow is on the specimen, are several small patches of native gold, best observed with microscope or hand lens. The gold is also associated with pyrite on the far right side of the specimen. The last 2 photos show some of the gold scattered in the vugs. I was careful not to remove too much of the limonite. The tricky thing about gold on limonite is to remove some limonite but not too much as to compromise the attachment of the gold or degrade the geological value of the specimen. Fabulous example of the high grade gold ore mined at this historic NC locality! 8x5x3.5 cm
