Description: Narrowleaf Pawpaw Asimina Longifolia The Narrowleaf Pawpaw is a rare Florida Native fruit that grows only on one of our farms. It's only about knee high and forms into a bush when happy. Most of the bushes on our farm are younger and pretty small. When mowing the paths around the farm, we try our hardest to avoid hitting them! Leaves will form on the stems in the springtime with flowers to follow in May - June. The flowers are very pretty! They are a white color with purple on the inside. Flowers will face the ground and have really no smell. We have read that the beetles and flies will pollinate these flowers. Shortly after, little green fruits will form. The fruits will grow in size throughout the summer and fall from the bush when ripe. We have watched these grow for 3 years, but we have never been able to harvest a fruit. Once the fruit ripens and drops, the Gopher Tortoise will beat us to it! 2022 was the first year were able to harvest the PawPaw's. The Gopher Tortoises ate about half of what we had growing, but we were just happy to try one! The smell of the ripe fruit is wonderful! Like a tropical, fruity mango smell. Well, the taste is not quite like the smell, kind of bland actually. The fruit also has a Papaya-like bitter taste that we do not care for. Of all of the fruits we harvested we never have many seeds. The seeds were picked from the fruit when ripe, washed in spring water, then left to dry overnight. The next morning we packaged these and placed them in the refrigerator. From everything we have read, this is the best way to keep the seeds fresh. There are 2 PawPaw's needed for cross pollination to occur to get fruit. These seeds were harvested July 2023 Seed Starting For natural stratification - Sow seeds in fall for sprigs by spring. The sprout will not surface until a tap root of about 10" has formed underneath. Alternatively, the seeds can also be stored in the refrigerator for 90 days prior to planting. Then, sow the seeds in early springtime. Soak seeds in warm water overnight Sow 1" deep in well draining, sandy soil Seeds will start to show roots within 30 days Within 60 days the roots should be about 10" long and sprigs should start to surface. The PawPaw goes dormant in the winter-time and will appear to 'die' back. No worries, more leaves will appear the next spring! Shipping The Pawpaw seeds are on the larger side and must be shipped as a 'package'. They will ship USPS First Class Ground with Tracking for FREE! Check out our store!
