Duodecimo. (6) 148, 585 (43)pp. Original calf with raised bands, missing both clasps. Frontispiece woodcut showing King David playing the lyre. Decorative head and endpieces. Collected for private prayers and public services, includes appendix with the Heidelberg Catechism and prayers. Compiled due to a synodal resolution for the Reformed Protestant parishes in the United States of America. The new and revised edition contains the best translations of Ambrosius Lobwasser's psalms, augmented by Jacob Spreng's translations, partially taken from the Herborner Gesangbuch (Hymn Book). A collection of old and new ingenious hymns complements these choices, particularly those conceived in the spirit of the apostle Paul. Accordingly hymns from the Marburg and Palatinate Hymn Books are included, particularly those composed by Joachim Neander, Friedrich Adolf Lampe, Caspar Zollikoffer, among others. In addition it contains songs from various German legends, keeping the melodies of the Palatinate hymn book. Considering the critical times during the revision of the Hymn Book the standard for inclusion into this hymn book was their capacity to uplift, respectively comfort the congregations. The collection includes a number of scores for hymns and songs.Text in German, Gothic script. Covers with light wear along edges and rubbed; missing clasps. Book plate of the United Theological Seminary Library, Dayton, Ohio, on inside front cover. Some damp staining along edges of first and last few pages. Block somewhat age-toned. Back endpaper with light fraying along edges and pasted library slip for due dates. Good condition.
