Description: Photos one and two show details of a young specimen in my collection as well as the very attractive pale blue flowers that this plant is noted for. The third through fifth photos show the plant offered for sale, a large, well established individual that has recently been transplanted into fresh New Zealand sphagnum moss in a 5” round plastic basket. This specimen is extremely clean – in fact near leaf perfect – and flowering. The plant can be grown either on a flat surface or set up as a hanging plant with three or four wire hanger. Overall plant height with basket 18" with a nicely-developed 3.25" diameter caudex. This species also produces handsome, ruby red fruit after flowering. Myrmephytum beccarii is a large, warm-growing ant plant of the coffee family (Rubiaceae) originating from Quezon Province in the central Philippines. They are amazing subjects for cultivation as tropical ornamentals for growers who can provide a well-lit, warm environment year-round. In many parts of the country, these plants can be grown as hanging plants in bright shade during the late spring, summer and early fall. Do well in bright bay windows and can be grown to full size in one with enough patience. Somewhat drought-tolerant, but prefers uniformly moist, not wet, growing conditions. Good subjects for staging in succulent bonsai style. The plant shown is a six year-old, second generation cultivated plant, grown from seed from my own selected parent stock originating from wild-collected seed accessed in 2008. One stem of the plant has been allowed to grow sideways since youth to exaggerate the twisted and bulky natural aspect of this species caudexes, although the plants are often semi pendent in nature as well. This is a near mature plant that will soon produce viable fruit from self-pollination in attractive red berries. Ants are not required for successful cultivation of this species and the plant in my collection do not house ant colonies. All plants offered are greenhouse grown on benches in the San Francisco Bay Area, California.
