Very Old, Rare And Well-used. 148 cm. Nigeria Origin. Yoruba People, Nigeria. The Yoruba form one of the largest tribes in west Africa. There are 30 million Yoruba people in West Africa. They are predominant in Nigeria. 21% of the Nigerian population are Yoruba. Description. An outstanding, well-used and very old example of a Yoruba palace door panel made from very dense and heavy wood. It feature raised relief theme of Yoruba societal life arranged in sections called registers. This example features five registers. This palace door panel is one I can confirm as a genuinely old tribal artefact obtained in person from it's original region of creation and use in the traditional domain of the Yoruba people of Nigeria. This door panel is likely at least seven decades old or perhaps older from provenance information available to me plus my experienced appraisal of it physical appearance, style and cahracter. This panel was obtained six years ago by us as direct acquisition from the palace courtyard of a titled Yoruba traditional ruler in Ekiti State in the South West region of Nigeria that hosts the Yoruba people. Attractive patination with use of dyes and stain that has faded and fused over time with wood used to produces an authentic weathered appearnce. This particular panel features very skillful, unique and expert work in the style of Dada Areogun regarded as perhaps the second greatest Yoruba carver after the very talented and highly acclaimed Olowe of Ise. Door panel showing normal sign of wear and tear and some wood degradation over several decades of utilitarian use. . A rare, used and old museum quality artefact I personally deem a highly sought-after and collectible treasure that is surely one of very the best available anyway today and offered at a reasonable price with free worldwide postage. Use. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, these intricately carved palace doors were crafted to announce the power of Yoruba royalty. They consist of sections called registers. On each register carved raised relief scenes portray everyday life, kingship rituals, and the ruling dynasty. Registers would for example show employees of colonial masters on bicycle and attending to official duties, Warriors on horses, maternity figures, musicians and entertsiners, attendants bearing gifts for chieftains and respected elders etc. Motifs drawn from Yoruba societal life also infuse this artists work, reflecting the dynamism of Yoruba culture in the twentieth century. Measurement. 148cmhigh x 55cm wide x 2cm deep. Weight: 13kg Delivery information. We always endeavour to send out our items using UPS tracked service. Please note we are a UK-based seller who trade internationally and mainly by obtaining tribal artifacts directly in their area of creation and use as we rate authenticity higher than anything else per tribal art. We sometime therefore send items, especially big items, directly from where they were field-collected as this saves duplication of cost and effort for us. Please note that postage cost reflects the big size and heavy weight of the item. Kindly allow two weeks for delivery after payment is made. Thank you.
