Description: Grown on our chemical-free haven from today's hectic modern world, these open-pollinated common mullein seeds are ready for planting! Wild-foraged, as we actually like most "weeds." 25+ seeds. This medicinal perennial (Verbascum thapsus) grows best in full sun, but does OK in partial shade as pictured. Some people grow this dramatic plant for ornamental purposes, but it also is used as a tea, tincture, hair and fabric dye, toilet paper alternative (yes, really- but don't flush it!), and dried leaves are used as torches and candle wicks. The flowers attract beneficial pollinators and all parts of this plant are useful: flowers, roots, and leaves. The leaves are delightfully soft! The first year these look to me like lamb's ear. The second year they come back and send up a tall stalk, usually around 5 feet tall on our property. Mullein loves to grow in disturbed soil. It does fine in both drought and during rainy periods, but it definitely does not gravitate towards soggy soil. Our soil is a heavy clay and it grows naturally without any watering or intervention on our part, but it also does well in other soils in zones 3-9. Also referred to as Jacob's staff, Aaron's rod, Jupiter's staff, lungwort, flannel leaf, velvet plant, and velvet dock. We are allowing mullein, stinging nettle, and curly dock to take over our septic area so that we won't need to mow anymore, though this would not work for all septic situations. A useful and beautiful plant- an asset to any homestead and one that I wouldn't do without! Please note that these seeds may have some chaff from harvesting the seeds in the mix. The seeds are incredibly tiny and fine! *Grown on our beyond organic property- if I won't consume it or put it on my skin, it doesn't go on my plants! From our healthy home to yours! Note that these are not mechanically processed and thus can have some chaff and debris in with the seeds.
