This is the awesome black with gray boiler front Union Pacific Challenger steam engine that was one of the earliest things MTH produced. Since it is in the Rail King line, it can run on O-31 and higher. It is great to have such a neat engine and still be able to run it on O-31 without having to get the super wider radius. ORIGINALLY, this unit was only issued in the whistle version. However. this unit was professionally upgraded to Protosounds 2 by an authorized MTH Service tech. He also liked things prototypical, so he added lots of great cosmetic detail as well, such as: Silver handrails replaced with metal grade piano wire that is black like the real engine (the silver handrails are impossible to paint!) Journal boxes were painted with white centers The original MTH bell that sat on top of the boiler was replaced with the more realisitic bell bracket and brass bell that mounts on the FRONT of the boiler Engineer and fireman figures were added to the cab THE TECH ADDED A SUPERCAPACITOR in place of the battery, so you never have to change the battery again. Has lots of cosmetic detail upgrades such as painted journals, brass bell assembly on front, black handrails, real coal on tender, and more. There is a paint rub along the back edge of the cab roof, and there is a small paint nick on one of the cylinders, pictured. BOX is nice, P-7 with some common discoloration on one end flap.
