It breaks the rectification to DC in half, resulting in a mixed DC/AC supply that can "jolt" sticky DC motors and gear trains. Perfect for Athearn Blue Box HO locos and similar vintage DC locos. Once the world standard for powering HO trains, the MRC 501 Throttle Pack delivered dependable, robust DC power to train layouts at 12VDC and up to 1 full Amp of continuous power. I am the original owner of this Throttle Pack, purchasing it in the early 70s. It's been in heated/air-conditioned storage ever since. It has developed some rusty scratches on the brushed imitation copper finish, but this seems to be an historical issue with most MRC 501 Throttle Packs of this age.
