He is a Master Model Railroader, having appeared on the cover of Mainline Modeler in April of 1986. He was with the Illinois Central Railroad for eight years. He has rendered three paintings for the Illinois Central Railroad Historical Society. A resident of Pueblo West, Colorado, he is retired from the Association of American Railroads at the Transportation Technology Center in Pueblo, Colorado, and did a painting for the Center's 25th year of serving America's railroads. Commissioned by the Pueblo Locomotive and Rail Historical Society, Inc., the predecessor non-profit of the Pueblo Railway Foundation, railroad artist Fred Carlson captures the sweet music and heavenly sounds of 2912 on grade with fourteen passenger cars.
