Description: We are extremely honored and pleased to have the opportunity to present, for your consideration, this very Important Monumental Original Finish New York Classical Heavily Carved and Stenciled Empire Mahogany Sleigh Bed attributed to Deming & Bulkley (Circa: 1825). The exceptional carving, particularly the four toed hairy paw feet, and the beautiful, detailed stenciling are signature examples of Deming & Bulkley. Though based in New York, they also had a retail shop in Charleston SC and were very active in the South from 1820-1840. We also have the provenance of this very rare and outstanding bed which will be provided to the buyer. This outstanding bed could be the only Deming & Bulkley example in existence with the original stenciling. It is a very exciting opportunity for the distinguished collector of quality! This Important ca. 1825 Original Finish New York Classical Heavily Carved and Stenciled Empire Mahogany Sleigh Bed attributed to Deming & Bulkley measures 45 1/2” in total height overall, 95 1/2” in total length overall, and 62 1/2” in total width overall. The inside dimensions measure 52 3/8” in width by 65” in length where the box spring would need to sit on top of the frame bolt supports. There is additional room for a mattress on the inside when measured across the end bolt supports and from end to end where the finished mahogany begins. This inside dimension measures 77” in length by 54 ½” in width. The successful buyer may want to have this special bed professionally measured and fitted for a custom mattress. The design and attention to detail on this bed is beyond impeccable! The Headboard and footboard have fully intricately carved scrolls with acanthus leaves wrapping around cornucopia/horn of plenty with finely carved nut clusters on all four scrolled end sides. The hairy paw feet are masterfully carved with four toenails and are connected to a wrapped cornucopia/ horn of plenty that is bearing fruits, nuts and leaves that are blossoming on all four legs. This phenomenal bed has gorgeous mahogany panels with all original gold gilt stenciling throughout over black ebonized trim with outlines, geometrics, pinwheels, tulips, rose, and fruit and leaf clusters. The stenciling areas are located at the top scroll of headboard and footboard, inner panel on S-Scroll ends, center of the side rails, and the center on the lower footboard and lower headboard. It is amazing that most of the original stenciling remains intact. All of the exceptional carvings, particularly the four toed hairy paw feet, and the beautiful, detailed stenciling are signature attributes of Deming & Bulkley. This gorgeous sleigh bed weighs approximately 250 pounds is constructed of solid Mahogany and is wearing its original finish.
