Description: Amazing vintage c1990s original Robert C. Burnell signed Stone Soldier Pottery art pottery bottle/vase. This unique piece was crafted by Robert as opposed to his daughter Jen. Thanks to a fellow ebayer and former Stone Soldier employee and friend of the family we have determined this to be Robert’s work basing this “as much on the depth and type of glaze as well as the actual form and artistry”. This piece is chunky and brutal while Jen’s work is much “lighter with simpler glazes”. The bottle is crafted in a deliberately off center shape with the bottle having a bit of “swaying” to its shape and the spout gently off center. A very heavy and quality piece with exceptional hand crafted detail and superb sparkling two tone brown and black glaze. Stamped Stone Soldier Pottery along the base and signed Burnell. The Stone Soldier Pottery was founded by the late Robert C. Burnell in 1968 along with his wife Connie Burnell to create a line of work, some of which are still being produced today. "As for the name Stone Soldier, lets hear it in Bob's words...The inspiration for my figures comes from Japanese Hani-Wa sculpture. Han-Wa, literally clay cylinders, were burial mound sculptures - soldiers, dancers, animals, clowns - all to accompany the emperor on his trip to the next world. My first two pieces were much in the Hani-Wa style but quickly evolved into Hani-Wa Bob Burnell style. The third soldier, now my logo, is representative of the marine drill Sargent who in the mid 1950's made his recruits on training drill ford a river numerous times until one of the recruits drowned.
