Description: Modern French Masters, A Series of Biographical and Critical Reviews by American Artists, The Century Co. (1896). A RARE opportunity to own an antique original edition containing thirty-seven wood engravings and twenty-eight half-tone illustrations. Edited by John C. Van Dyke, this collection personal essays about the 20 featured French artists and their works, written by their American pupils and friends. The green cloth-board cover of this 128-year old book shows moderate signs of wear and age, including scuff marks, scratches and a few small stains. The gold imprints on the front and back covers and along the spine are faded and somewhat darkened in spots, but still visible. The name and personal library imprint of a previous owner are the only markings in the entire book. The early and final pages are moderately foxed. The hinges are creased and there is some detachment along the back cover hinge (interior only, see picture). The binding is secure. All interior pages are clean and unmarked. The text and illustrations are clear and sharp. Overall a sturdy copy of a scarce antique that will last for many more years. Your purchase helps support the Lexington Public Library (Lexington, KY).
