Description: A signed copy of his important book on modern Russia (particularly given ongoing events), with accompanying items, and a bonus earlier 1st edition of his key 1980's work 'Perestroika' from Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union (USSR) from 1985 to 1991, and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for 'the leading role he played in the radical changes in East-West relations.' Mr Gorbachev died on 30 August 2022 aged 91. 'The New Russia ' published by Polity Press in Cambridge on 27 May 2016, 2nd reprint, large modern hardback, (xii) + 464 pages. Flat hand signed by Mikhail Gorbachev to a special bookplate from the reputable English bookshop Coles Books, which is affixed to the title page. This was a special signing arrangement progressed by Coles where the former Russian President signed HB reprint copies of his new book (I've never seen a signed 1st printing of this book). Internally in As New unread condition. Externally in fine condition, there is a small crinkle to the cloth of the book and the dustjacket at the rear upper left corner. Included within this package are a 'signed edition' card tag with ribbon and 2 Coles bookmarks obtained by the original dealer who acquired this book. I am also including as a bonus item, a 1st printing UK HB copy of Mr Gorbachev's earler important work 'Perestroika - New Thinking for Our Country and the World ', published by Collins in 1987. This book is in near very good condition, internally seems to be barely read, some pushing at spine ends, light general wear, some spotting to top edge of text block, endpapers and inner panels of dustjacket - dustjacket now housed in a removable plastic sleeve. After years of rapprochement, the relationship between Russia and the West is more strained now than it has been in the past 25 years. Putin’s motives, his reasons for seeking confrontation with the West, remain for many a mystery. Not for Mikhail Gorbachev. In this new work, Russia’s elder statesman draws on his wealth of knowledge and experience to reveal the development of Putin’s regime and the intentions behind it. He argues that Putin has significantly diminished the achievements of perestroika and is part of an over-centralized system that presents a precarious future for Russia. Faced with this, Gorbachev advocates a radical reform of politics and a new fostering of pluralism and social democracy. Gorbachev’s insightful analysis moves beyond internal politics to address wider problems in the region, including the Ukraine conflict, as well as the global challenges of poverty and climate change. Above all else, he insists that solutions are to be found by returning to the atmosphere of dialogue and cooperation which was so instrumental in ending the Cold War. This book represents the summation of Gorbachev’s thinking on the course that Russia has taken since 1991 and stands as a testament to one of the greatest and most influential statesmen of the twentieth century. ' This is a reminder of how vast was [Gorbachev's] achievement in allowing in the light of freedom. Where his contemporary, Nelson Mandela, was great beyond the whites' deserts in building a post-apartheid nation, Mr Gorbachev was great beyond the deserts of the Soviet Union (and perhaps even of the west, which could barely understand or trust him) in proposing a way for the despotic world to aspire to democratic governance, freely organised civil society and rule of law. That he failed, he keenly knows. Our best hope is that his ideas, in time, succeed.
