Description: Original oil painting on canvas by American artist Marvin Cherney (1925-1967), a mid century figurative painter with decidedly unsettling undertones to his work, as this painting demonstrates. This work is signed by the artist in the upper right and it is in its original period frame. It is a very good sized piece, the stretchers measuring 34 x 30 inches, with frame it is 41 x 37 inches. It bears a label with title on the reverse, "Two Girls", along with inventory #MC 261. The painting is in excellent condition, the frame has a few dings that could be touched up. I'm including a catalog from a 1968 Cherney retrospective exhibition in Baltimore entitled "Paintings on the Theme of Youth". The catalog lists a smaller oil on paper that is titled "Two Girls" and I suspect it may have been a study for this painting. Marvin Cherney (1925-1967), a native of Baltimore, attended the Maryland Institute of Art and the School for Art Studies in New York. Following his formal training, he traveled in Europe and later returned to settle in New York. A figurative painter, Cherney has been described as an adherent of "Mystic Realism", his promising career was cut tragically short by his untimely death at the age of 41 in 1967. Cherney exhibited his work in numerous gallery exhibitions, in New York, he was represented by Kennedy Galleries, Babcock Galleries and ACA Gallery, as well as exhibiting in national exhibitions at the National Academy of Design, The Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum, Audubon Artists, University of Nebraska, Silvermine Artists Guild, Butler Art Institute, Ringling Museum, Howard University, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Mary Washington College, Whitney Museum of American Art, and at the Detroit Institute of Art. Cherney's works are held in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, University of Syracuse, Swarthmore College, Reading Pennsylvania Museum, Kalamazoo Art Institute, Butler Institute of American Art and other collections.
