We took a used WELCH Model 1400 Vacuum Pump that we had recently acquired as surplus from a pharmaceutical company laboratory that had been using WELCH DuoSeal oil and, WITHOUT PERFORMING ANY MAINTENANCE, OVERHAUL OR REPAIR WHATSOEVER ON THIS USED PUMP, and using NEW, UNUSED GENUINE WELCH standard DuoSeal Brand Oil, we drained the reservoir of the old oil and performed the recommended "Forced Oil Flush" several times in accordance w/ the WELCH DuoSeal Pump Owner's Manual to purge any residual oil that was previously used on the pump and make sure that only the NEW WELCH DuoSeal oil would be present, filled it to proper level, and ran the pump achieving an ultimate vacuum of 18 milliTorr (mTorr, microns) accurately measured using a Granville-Phillips Convectron model# 275 convection-Pirani type digital gauge (better response time than thermocouple-type gauges like Hastings) w/ a Granville-Phillips model# 175071 sensor, and which had been just previously calibrated. Using the SAME pump just after the previous test and, again, WITHOUT PERFORMING ANY MAINTENANCE, OVERHAUL OR REPAIR WHATSOEVER ON THIS PUMP, we emptied the WELCH DuoSeal oil and, using the HIVAC 19™ HIGH VACUUM PUMP OIL, performed the same Forced Oil Flush procedure several times to rid the pump of the residual DuoSeal oil, filled the pump to proper level with the HIVAC 19™ HIGH VACUUM PUMP OIL, and ran and tested the vacuum on the pump in the same manner. The pump achieved an ultimate vacuum of 8 mTorr (mTorr, microns) measured with the same digital gauge in the same exact manner. TRY IT ON YOUR PUMP!
