Versions of those may now be purchased along with an interferometer pressure sensor kit. This listing is for kits of parts to construct several different types of Michelson Interferometers. The only one of these currently available but also the most flexible is Kit #3. There are also quadrature decoders and interfaces to a displacement readout using µMD0. Search for "Sam's Electronics and Laser Kit Information and Manuals". eBay doesn't like off-site links. :( Simple Michelson Interferometer Parts: In addition to what's in the kits, you will need to provide some means of mounting the parts and being able to move one of the reflectors while maintain precise alignment. Including a linear stage would be ideal but would also double or triple the cost. These are intended for educational use to demonstrate the basic principles of interferometry. All of these kits require a red HeNe or similar laser with a coherence length of at least a few inches (not included). For some, a polarized laser may be desirable or required. Most common red HeNe are suitable. Michelson Interferometer Kit 1: This consists of a 50:50 non-polarizing beam-splitter plate good for 400-700 nm, a pair of high quality planar 1/2" square aluminized first surface mirrors on cheezy but usable kinematic mounts, and a silicon photodiode to use as a detector. Michelson Interferometer Kit 2: This consists of a 50:50 beam-splitter plate good for 400-700 nm, a pair of 1/2" cube-corner retro-reflector trihedral prisms, and a silicon photodiode to use as a detector. One benefit of this kit is that there are virtually no back-reflections directly into the laser as is the case with the basic Michelson setup. Michelson Interferometer Kit 3: This consists of a polarizing beam-splitter cube good for 600-670 nm, a pair of 1/2" cube-corner retro-reflector trihedral prisms, and a silicon photodiode to use as a detector. A linear polarizer (LP) oriented at 45 degrees is needed to combine the two polarizations at the PD. A piece of polarizing film will be included that can be used as an LP will be included (not shown). The PBSC enables the orthogonal polarized modes of the laser to be detected independently. However, note that this contains most of the parts in the "DIY Interferometer Optics Kits for Laser Measurement System uMD1" (item: 303503319662) and that may be more appropriate. Displacement Measurement Kits: In addition to what's in these kits, you will need to provide a low power red HeNe laser. A linearly polarized HeNe laser is generally preferred but a random polarized HeNe laser can be used with the addition of a linear polarizer if it meets certain criteria. Most common HeNe lasers are satisfactory. This is NOT included. Displacement Measurement Kit with µMD0: This will enable the principles of precision interferometer-based measurement systems to be demonstrated. It is basically a combination of Michelson Interferometer Kit #3, parts to build a simple Quadrature decoder, and the µMD0 measurement display, along with a linear stage for the moving arm reflector so that actual measured displacement can be compared with the micrometer calibration. A Windows PC or laptop will be required for the µMD0 display and an oscilloscope (almost any type) is desirable to view the sin and cos signals from the Quad decoder. The PC and scope are NOT included, but almost any type will be satisfactory. The specific parts included are:Michelson Interferometer Kit 3: 1/2" Polarizing Beam-Splitter (PBS) cube, 2x 1/2" Cube-Corner (CC) trihedral prism, silicon PhotoDiode (PD), a piece of Linear Polarizer (LP) sheet.Quadrature Decoder Kit: Variable attenuator plate to be used as non-polarizing beam-splitter, 2x PDs, and pieces of linear and circular polarizer sheets.Micro Measurement Display 0 Kit: Atmega 328P Nano 3.0 microcomputer board, all other required electronic parts to interface to the sin/cos signals from the Quad decoder, and solderless breadboard.Precision micrometer linear stage with a range of at least 1/2 inch. Styles may vary. The HeNe Laser is NOT included but almost any low power red HeNe laser can probably be used. A suitable laser may be available. For DIY displacement measuring kits with the laser, see item # 303881941619. And/or ask. A scheme for mounting of the laser, optics, and linear stage will need to be provided. Suggestions for this platform include an 8 x 18 inch piece of high quality 1/2-3/4 inch laminated plywood or 1/2 inch aluminum plate. It doesn't need to be fancy or expensive. DLX Displacement Measurement Kit with µMD0: Similar to the one above but adds BLANK PCBs for the Quad decoder and µMD0 Interface. Quad-Sin-Cos Decoder Kit ONLY: Parts to construct rudimentary setup (same as included in the displacement measurement kits, above). This includes a variable attenuator plate to be used as non-polarizing beam-splitter, 2x PDs, and pieces of linear and circular polarizer sheets, along with a custom PCB which can be used for mounting the parts. As with the others, performance is limited without proper high speed preamps, but suggested circuits may be found in the manual and elsewhere. Note: A solderless breadboard is no longer included since (1) it's kiind of silly for this and (2) they are readily available elsewhere. Thanks for looking! --- sam
