Description: This is a rare souvenir program from the Original West End production of the irreverent, but hilarious "JERRY SPRINGER: THE OPERA" at the Cambridge Theatre in London. (The production opened April 9th, 2003 at the National Theatre and though scheduled to play only 48 performances, was extended and eventually transferred on November 10th, 2003 to London's Cambridge Theatre where it ran for 609 performances.) ..... Winner of four separate "Best Musical" awards (The Olivier Awards, The Critics' Circle Awards, The Evening Standard Awards and The What's On Stage Awards), the production is far from demure. It has been described as depraved, irreligious, profane and obscene and resulted in a record number of complaints from viewers when the BBC aired the production throughout the United Kingdom. Why such a subject? Composer and co-author Richard Thomas said of the original Jerry Springer Show, "It's got tragedy. It's got violence. There are people screaming at each other and you can't understand what they're saying. It's perfect for opera." And he was right! The musical's main character is JERRY SPRINGER (played by MICHAEL BRANDON), the American talk-show host who after interviewing a diaper-fetishist, a transexual and an aspiring stripper and following a snappy dance number from the Ku Klux Klan, is shot and sent to hell to interview Satan, Jesus and Adam and Eve as if his life depends on it. Others in the cast included DAVID BEDELLA, ALISON JIEAR, WILLS MORGAN, LEON CRAIG, CARRIE ELLIS, CHRISTOPHER KEY, RYAN MOLLOY, CLAIRE PLATT and BENJAMIN LAKE ..... CREDITS: Music by RICHARD THOMAS; Book and Lyrics by STEWART LEE and RICHARD THOMAS; Orchestrations by MARTIN KOCH; Sets designed by JULIAN CROUCH; Costumes designed by LEAH ARCHER; Choreographed by JENNY ARNOLD; Directed by STEWART LEE; Produced by AVALON PROMOTIONS LTD. and ALLAN McKEOWN in association with the NATIONAL THEATRE .....
