That is a curious thing about railroading; no matter what its vicissitudes, and they are many, the loyalty of the personnel remains unflagging. Whether it be the "top-of-the-rail-man" or his commanding officer at a high-set desk, or the many ranks and classifications in between, the spirit remains the same. The sense of responsibility, the affectionate loyalty to an idea and a great American tradition are the outstanding qualities of the American railroader.
