Although little known today, he was considered by his contemporaries to be one of the best poets of his time, comparable to the "Prince of French poets", Clément Marot.Although he was certainly an illegitimate child from a noble Angoulême family well established at the court of France, we do not know exactly who his parents were. No mention of his mother is made in biographical sources. As for his father, it has been suggested that he could have been Octovien de Saint-Gelais, bishop of Angoulême since 1494, himself a poet and translator of the Aeneid into French. The one who is presented by Mellin's contemporaries as his uncle took care of his education. But this is not enough to solve the mystery of the poet's origins. Any of Octovian's brothers (one of whom is also named Mellin) could be his father. The date of birth of Mellin de Saint-Gelais is also open to question. According to one of his poems, he could have been born on Mars 3 or November 3, but the year is not specified. This date also suits Abbé Molinier in the monograph he devotes to the court poet: in the hypothesis that Octovien de SaiAlthough he was certainly an illegitimate child from a noble Angoulême family well established at the court of France, we do not know exactly who his parents were.
