Description: Medicine and the Allied Sciences, Volumes II and III. Published by permission of the Surgeon General of the Army by D. Appleton and Company, 1919. Written by Samuel Fomon, Ph.D, M.D., Major Medical Reserve Corps, United States Army. These are the last two volumes of the three-volume set. Hardcover in Army Green cloth with gilt lettering and horizontal bands on the spines. Details for each volume follow. Volume II: Hygiene, Practice of Medicine, Surgery. 624 pages in three sections plus an index. Contains 25 "illustrations in the text" and a "colored plate" with three graphic illustrations of the ravages of syphilis. (More than 350,000 U.S. soldiers contracted a venereal disease during World War I.) Volume III: Obstetrics, Gynecology, Diseases of the Eye, Skin, Ear, Nose; Medical Jurisprudence, Materia Medica and Therapeutics, State Questions. 532 pages in six sections plus an index. Contains 14 "illustrations in the text". Overall good condition. Both volumes have solid, square bindings; clean, undamaged board surfaces; gilt on spines is clear and bright except for "APPLETON" at the bottoms; some wear and small bumps at corners and tops and bottoms of spines. Interiors are free of writing and odor, with no discoloration aside from some on the insides of boards and first/last free endpapers. No chips or tears on any pages of volume 3; volume 2 has a 3-inch tear at the bottom of the half-title page, and there is a large, puzzling piece missing from pp. 419-420; this may be the result of a manufacturing mishap, as the pages on either side show abnormal wrinkling. This is a handsome pair of books surveying the state of U.S. medicine from 115 years ago.
