Description: McClellan's Own Story is an autobiography of one of the most controversial military figures of the U.S. Civil War, Maj. General George Brinton McClellan. The book was published in 1887 by McClellan's wife after the general had passed. This book is a FIRST EDITION, part of the "Shoulder Strap" Series American Civil War memoirs, named so because of the design on the spine. The book focuses on his short time as general in chief of the army. Maj. Gen. McClellan was a master administrator, largely responsible for the successful creation and organization of the Army of the Potomac. However, he was widely criticized during his time in command and throughout the remainder of his life for his insubordinate behavior and inability to effectively command his creation in the field against the foe. He was commander-in-chief of the Union forces from November 1861 to March 1862 and Commander of the Army of the Potomac until November 1862. His legacy as a commander remains in contention by many historians. The value of this book is to view into the mind of George McClellan during the bitter early days of the Civil War. No study of this important figure is complete without this volume. Condition:This volume is a First Edition published by Charles L. Webster & Company in 1887. The cover consists of green cloth boards. The spine and bindings of this volume remain tight, the paper is in very good condition with some minor tanning, which is to be expected.
