Yoruba People of Nigeria. Description. Truly stunning, distinct and well-crafted example. Detailing is particularly impressive and testimony to the high skill level of te carver. This outstanding and masterful exampleorignates from the famous Adigbologe workshop in Abeokuta, Ogun State of Nigeria. Today, "Adigbologe" refers to works of art produced by a number of esteemed artists sharing mainly familial affiliation with the highly esteemed Adigbologe atelier, rather than the works of a particular artist. The workshop was started by a well-respected Yoruba master Carver called Ojerinde who died circa 1914. The workshop was located in Itoko township of Abeokuta. Item is over 6 decades old and perhaps significantly older. Female wears elegant braided coiffure with a noticeable but stable crack to rear of head . She has scarification marks to torso and rear. Dark, fine and lustrous patination. Degradation of wood to the base but expected as these items would be place on the ground, often soil, in use. Please note that that is is a well-used and very old offering. Overall, a considerable and significant collector item in good condition for age.
