Description: This is a custom 12" figure commemorating one of the most interesting women of the Old West, Mary Ann "Molly" Goodnight. Mary Ann (Dyer) Goodnight was 14 when her family moved to Texas. She was the daughter of a prominent lawyer. Molly would become a school teacher. In 1877 Molly married Charles Goodnight. They had no children. Charles Goodnight and his partner Oliver Loving started the Goodnight/Loving Trail. They moved cattle from Texas to western markets. The Goodnight-Loving trail was used for many cattle drives in the late 1860's. When Charles and Molly married they helped start the JA Ranch in the Texas Panhandle with another couple. The JA Ranch covered a vast area including the Palo Duro Canyon (1500 ft deep, 10 miles wide, and over 100 miles long)and was one of the largest ranches in history. The other couple decided to leave the JA Ranch. With all of Charles' responsibilities Molly found herself alone at the ranch many times. Molly would be known as the Little Mother of the Plains and the Mother of the Panhandle due to the fact that she was the only woman in the area and she helped the local Indians and cowboys in a lot of ways. She would teach the cowboys to read, trade with the Indians, and mend or nurse both groups when the might be sick or injured. Molly would also care for buffalo calves whose mothers had been killed, starting the Goodnight buffalo herd. Molly had her own brand. She was so lonely she made pets out of three chickens that a cowboy had brought her to cook for dinner. Charles and Molly were responsible for starting a town (Goodnight), Goodnight Community Church, and an academy that eventually became the Goodnight College. Molly Goodnight is very colorful and interesting figure of the old West. Although this figure does not look exactly like Molly Goodnight, there is a bit of a resemblance and the figure displays well. sold as is. stand included.
