Description: Martin Caidin. MAROONED. New York, NY: E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc.,1964. 1st edition. With “First Edition” printed on the copyright page, which indicates that this is the correct 1st edition, 1st printing. This is NOT a book club book. This is NOT an ex-library book. Buyer beware: there may have been a later printing of MAROONED that was published in this hardcover format, as well as in similar hardcover formats. This is the real deal: the true 1st edition, 1st printing. SCROLL DOWN THIS PAGE IMMEDIATELY TO SEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK AND THIS DUST JACKET. Martin Caidin was born in 1927 and he died in 1997. He was well-known as an author of fiction, a screenwriter, and as an authority on aeronautics and aviation. He was also an airplane pilot. He bought and restored a scarce 1936 Junkers Uu 52 airplane. He was the author of more than 50 fiction and nonfiction books, as well as more than 1,000 magazine articles. He is probably best-known for his novel CYBORG, which was the basis for the famous and successful television program “The Six Million Dollar Man.” Caidin’s fiction often incorporated future technological advances that were projected to occur, and also examined the political and social repercussions of these innovations. In this respect, his work is similar to that of the famous Michael Crichton. One of Caidin’s recurring themes is that of cyborgs, moldings of man and machine, using replacement body parts known as bionics. Caidin wrote three sequels to CYBORG: OPERATION NUKE, HIGH CRYSTAL, and CYBORG IV. These novels constitute a different continuity from that of “The Six Million Dollar Man.” Novelizations of several of the television episodes were written by other authors. Caidin was also credited in episodes of the original “The Six Million Dollar Man” spinoff, “The Bionic Woman.” Caidin’s novel MAROONED (offered here) is about American astronauts who become stranded in space and NASA’s subsequent attempt to rescue them and is based Project Mercury. In some ways MAROONED (both the book and the film of the same name) were a prequel to the famous film “Apollo 13,” starring Tom Hanks. The film “Marooned” was very successful. It starred Gregory Peck, Richard Crenna, David Janssen, James Franciscus, and Gene Hackman. Later in his career, Caidin established a company with the purpose of promoting aeronautics to young people. He was also a television talk show where he challenged representatives of many prominent American far-right organizations and hate groups. Martin Caidin was the author of such excellent books as THE LONG NIGHT, THE NIGHT HAMBURG DIES, RACE FOR THE MOON, BLACK THURSDAY, RED STAR IN SPACE, MAROONED (offered here), THE LAST FATHOM, NO MAN’S WORLD, FOUR CAME BACK, THE GOD MACHINE, DEVIL TAKE ALL, ALMOST MIDNIGHT, THE CAPE, THE LAST DOGFIGHT, THE TIGERS ARE BURNING, PLANETFALL, WHIP, WINGBORN, STAR BRIGHT, THE FINAL COUNTDOWN, and many, many others. From the dust jacket: “ . . . MAROONED . . . A Novel by MARTIN CAIDIN . . . Here is the novel that does for the space race what FAIL-SAFE did for the pushbutton war. Written by one of the world’s top astronautics writers, MAROONED is not only a vividly suspenseful novel, but an accurately realistic one. Martin Caidin has used his intimate and comprehensive knowledge of America’s space program to tell a dramatic story of today’s astronauts and what might happen tomorrow . . . In a gleaming, bell-shaped capsule orbiting the earth in harsh vacuum at more than 100 miles altitude, Project Mercury astronaut Richard J. Pruitt is marooned in spaCE. The failure of his retrorockets to fire and start his capsule’s return to earth has doomed the American astronaut to death by asphyxiation. He has only 43 hours of oxygen left. During those 43 hours an unprecedented drama unfolds, shaking all America, as two great nations - the United States and the Soviet Union - marshall their utmost resources in a race to attempt the all but impossible rescue of he marooned astronaut. The vivid story of this attempted rescue of a man hurtling through space at 300 miles per minute is remarkably gripping and accurate novel of the men who have dedicated their lives and careers to mankind’s exploration of the vertical frontier, with its unprecedented risks and challenges. Martin Caidin has taken no liberties with the technical facts of the American and Russian manned space programs, which form the framework of the novel. He has used the vast knowledge and literary ability developed in writing over forty books on aviation and aerospace subjects to create MAROONED, a novel in a new dimension that offers an unforgettable reading experience . . . “ From the rear flap of the dust jacket: “ . . . Martin Caidin, author of MAROONED, has written over forty books on aviation and aerospace subjects and is regarded as one of the world’s outstanding authorities in these fields. His research on both the American and Russian manned space programs has been extensive. He has flown his own plane thousands of miles around the United States and has also piloted a variety of civilian and military aircraft both here and abroad. Martin Caidin was awarded the coveted James J. Strebig Memorial Trophy for outstanding aviation writing by the Aviation Space Writers Association on two occasions . . . “ _______________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. _____________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A NEAR FINE book in a VERY GOOD to VERY GOOD+ dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its black quarter-cloth and green boards binding with green lettering on the spine of the book. There is no writing in the book; no bookplates; no remainder marks. The front and rear endpapers have areas of mild foxing; not very obtrusive. The edges of the pages are mildly tanned, but less than is usually encountered for 1st edition copies of this book. The dust jacket is NOT price-clipped and shows the correct 1st issue price of $4.95. There is some rubbing at the edges of the spine panel of the dust jacket; much less than is usually encountered, especially in that the dust jacket is made of very soft paper. It is improbable that one could find a FINE copy of this dust jacket. The great full wraparound dust jacket artwork is by the excellent artist Fred L. Wolff. I use the EBAY shipping system to send out the majority of the books that I sell. Insurance is included in the shipping charges for this book that the buyer will be paying. One would assume that the buyer would want to insure this book for its correct value. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF IMPORTANT MODERN SCIENCE FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF 1st EDITIONS MADE INTO FILMS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF MARTIN CAIDIN 1st EDITIONS! ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my “catalogue” of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to “give” these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they're worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you’re looking for a particular title or titles. I have thousands of books for sale that may or may not show up in my EBAY listings. I am happy to set up flexible PAYMENT and/or HOLD PLANS for any book(s) that you bid on and win. Shipping: $4.00 for USPS Media Mail shipping. $10.00 for USPS Priority Mail shipping. Buyers who wish to have packages sent to addresses outside of the U.S. are required to pay for the postage necessary to send such packages. Please note: if you want something other than USPS Media Mail shipping, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice or if you are a buyer outside of the United States, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice. You must be willing to pay for non-USPS Media Mail shipping charges or for international shipping charges. I reserve the right to negate a purchase if you are unwilling to pay for the correct shipping charges either to an address in the U.S. or if international shipping is required. I am happy to set up flexible payment and layaway plans if these options make it easier for you to participate in bidding and winning. Please e-mail me if you have any questions. See my other auctions on EBAY for excellent science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions (and a few other items). I specialize in science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions: award winners, cornerstone books, and generally recognized important books in the genre(s). I GUARANTEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK; IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, SEND IT BACK! If you prefer payment methods other than PayPal (as I do), I am happy to arrange for a different payment method for you. Before you buy from others, check out their return policies and their guarantees and compare them to mine. I stand behind all of my items FULLY. Why deal with a seller who won’t guarantee their books, doesn’t have a return policy, or doesn’t correctly describe the edition or condition of their book(s)?
