Description: Open to reasonable offers. 1929-1930 MARTIN Handcraft Typewriter Tenor Saxophone in good playing condition new Pads, Springs regulation material and lubricants. Work Completed approximately 1/1/24. I am playing this sax for fun and making minor improvements to the regulation as it settles into the renovation. Regarding the playing experience with the pearl touched through out the entire sax. It takes a few minutes to adjust to the feel and location but then your hands settle into the positions. My only major issue is that the Side D is a little difficult for me to reach. I have big hands and it is a little low for me I am sure it can be adjusted or a buffer added. Everyone has different hands so I will leave that to the next owner. If you are use to the modern linked G# pinky table it may take a bit more time to adjust. Info sourced from Saxophone.org sax serial number list:One of approximately 9,085 Typewriter saxophones manufactured by Martin 1929 -1930 SN 92,536 - 101,621 production run, not clear how many alto, tenor, baritone and sopranos in that number. Currently in a generic student level tenor case suitable for shipping, possibly Yamaha. I purchased this instrument in poor condition, where is the fun in not having a challenge . cknowledging it will never be put back to mint condition I took some liberties in the work. It needed about $500 of extensive mechanical attention which I outsourced to a professional, much dent work, some straightening, resoldering of the key guards and neck work. The due to pull down the neck developed a split on the underside and was repaired at the shop. This instrument has been fully disassembled, cleaned and all lacquer and accumulated patina removed. Due to the state of the oxidized finish I opted to make a brushed finish using a Dremel fine wire wheel. I don't know the history of this sax so if it has been re-lacquered or buffed previously it is likely as the engraving is light but still legible. Could be original but just don't want to make any miss representations The resulting finish is bare brass which is taking on a natural patina although it can be polish up to a somewhat "sparkly" brushed finish. Almost golden due to the light color of the brass. I renovated vs restored this instrument working within the limits of what was working with so I did not consider going further with relacquer. There will be some noticeable mottling to the finish which will continue to progress it is enjoyed. There is some noticeable wear on the key rods where prior repair/ swaging was performed as this is over 90 year old sax with a long history. No Closet Queen based upon the wear on the pearls it has been played and enjoyed for many years before being set aside. All pivot screw and rods have been cleaned and lubricated when installed with Alisyn High viscosity lubricant or Pivot lubricant. Aftermarket tenon plug included. The original mother of pearl touches on all the keys (Side keys, table keys and Eb/C are intact). There is almost no wear to the neck strap ring All pads are new (12/2023) with Music Medic standard thickness Soft Feel pads with maestro brass resonators or rivets on the smaller pads. All pads were installed with clear natural shellack and checked with a leak light for an air tight seal. All needle springs were removed and replaced with new blue steel needle springs. I opted to replace all spring as some of the original ones were a bit rusty and brittle. Rather than guess which other were good, I replaced the complete set. The Flat metal springs on keys like D, Eb, F and G# were in acceptable condition. All the retaining screws for these spring were removed and lubricated as were the springs when reinstalled. All keywork was aligned and checked for any drag or on the rods. Key work and posts were swaged to insure a secure fit and smooth operation. There is little play in any of the key work. All key cups were checked for level against the tone holes and centered above the tone hole to the limits of the instrument . All regulation material was replaced with new, varieties include: red felt disks and bumpers, natural cork, Tech cork, Teflon sheet and tubes. In addition, Ultrasuede was applied under various keys to dampen key work and reduce noise. The neck was refit to the tenon during the mechanical work. It fits securely inside the tenon. The key work was regulated to remove almost all free play/delay and synchronize the keys. The sax features: a Front F3 pearl on of the earlier adaptations of this feature, and all touches are pearls instead of rollers or flat metal touch pieces. Martin removed the alt low Eb which was common at the time I do not detect any leaks at the tone holes that can affect martin soldered on tone holes Note this design does not incorporate a linked left hand pinky table where the C#, B and Bb hold down the G# key. You could possibly have a tab soldered to the G# to upgrade this keywork or leave it as is. A very nice final product in tune, smooth, tight feel and quiet operation and full Martin tone Spring tension adjusted to my preference so you may need to have that adjusted when you start playing it. I try not to use the term "perfect" in my descriptions as one can always fine fault. My goal was to renovate this sax to good playing condition not restore to new. There will certainly be some blemishes and not perfectly square key guard. .It is a balance between making it perfect versus functional. A little too much straightening and you knock off the key guard decided to stop before it got worse. More photos or details on request. Mike
