TWO ORIGINAL COLOR LITHOGRAPHS BY MARC CHAGALL were created especially for this comprehensive and profusely illustrated monograph of the renowned stained glass windows in the Synagogue of Hadassah Medical Center in Ein Kerem, Jerusalem, depicting the twelve tribes of Israel. Chagall envisaged the synagogue as a crown offered to the Jewish Queen, and the windows as jewels of translucent fire. At the dedication ceremony in 1962 Chagall said: A stained glass window is a transparent partition between my heart and the heart of the world. To read the Bible is to perceive a certain light, and the window has to make this obvious through its simplicity and grace. The thoughts have nested in me for many years, since the time when my feet walked on the Holy Land, when I prepared myself to create engravings of the Bible. They strengthened me and encouraged me to bring my modest gift to the Jewish people, that people that lived here thousands of years ago. Chagall's Master Printer at the Mourlot workshop made twelve 20 color stone lithographs after Chagall's final models for the windows under Chagall's supervision. The work was published by Andre Sauret, one of the great European art book publishers of the middle third of the century, and published in an edition of unknown size. - Spaightwood Galleries. Very good in a very good dust jacket with very good lithographs. Boards have light wear. Few minor soil spots to the fore edges. Scattered minimal foxing to the fore edges. Internally, hinges sound. Binding tight. Lithographs clean and bright. Text and illustrations clean and bright. The dust jacket edges are a little worn. The outer covering of the dust jacket is in excellent condition with little wear. Inside front flap has a right angle crease to the right corner. Not price clipped. A great copy.
