Description: INTERNATIONAL BUYERS:? The shipping rates shown are for '1st Class International Package' with tracking.? Ebay is also promoting their EIS International Shipping program on sellers pages. I do not use this program because it is more expensive, slower, not very transparent, and frustrating to the buyer, if something goes wrong. Do not select it, if ebay does show it as an option. Thank you. Print Specifics: Type of print: Intaglio, steel engraving - Original fine quality antique printYear of printing: not indicated in the print. Best estimate: late 1860s Original artist : S. Original Narrative: c1840 View of Strada St. Giovanni Jesuits in Procession: The principal, or long streets of Valetta, eight in number, run parallel with the ridge of the hill called the "Hog's Back," on which the city is built, and derive the advantage of being level in consequence; but the cross streets, eleven in number, ascend the sides of the eminence, and form a communication between the two harbours of Marsa Musceit, and the Great Port. Strada St. Giovanna is one of those steep, cross, streets-of-stairs, so inconvenient to the infirm, and so execrated by the noble bard. The scene represented in the illustration, is that of a procession of the order of Jesuits, to whom less attention is paid than formerly, yet they are nowhere wholly without friends and devotees. The architecture of this avenue is much admired. It is a beau- tiful specimen of the style of Southern Europe. The houses are all of solid stone, which retains its bright colour unsullied in this mild climate, the upper stories being adorned that throw a rich, windows, heavy and and sombre colour over the picture. The upper parts of the buildings are occupied by the respectable classes. Between the first and the ground-floor is the mezzanino, or entresole, used as sleeping-rooms by the trades-people, or poorer classes, who dwell uniformly on the lowest floor. This strada, and all in Valetta, are paved or floored with hewn stone, and sometimes even with blocks of lava, brought from the sides of Etna for the purpose.
