Malta is a group of islands located in the Mediterranean Sea, south of Sicily. Great Britain formally acquired possession of Malta in 1814. The island staunchly supported the UK through both World Wars and remained in the Commonwealth when it became independent in 1964. A decade later Malta became a republic. Since about the mid-1980s, the island has transformed itself into a freight transshipment point, a financial center, and a tourist destination. Malta became an EU member in May of 2004. This coin depicts the Ballottra, or marten weasel, a nocturnal animal, which feeds on small animals such as frogs, rodents, lizards, nestlings and small rabbits. The coin is in copper and zinc with a slight percentage of nickel. It has a weight of 2.81g and measures 18.51mm in diameter (slightly larger than a USA dime), with a plain edge. The coin is golden yellow colored.
