Painting is signed in the lower right. Hewlett was most prolific in painting during the 50's and 60's. Original Painting is Framed in a spectacular artist made frame. Frame is embellished with intricately braided rope, mimicking the ornate gilt frames of the Renaissance."Self-taught African American artist Reverend Joel Hewlett (1921-1994) was a native of Evansville, Indiana. Hewlett worked at International Harvester and served as an associate pastor of Hood Temple AME Zion Church for 37 years. His religious carvings and paintings, depicting Jesus, biblical scenes and the lives of saints, reflect his deep Christian faith.
