Description: Alexander III the Great | AR Drachm | Postumous Issue Reference: Price 1365 Date: 323-317 BCE Obverse: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin Reverse: ΑΛEΞANΔPOY; Zeus Aëtophoros seated left holding eagle and sceptre, serpent in left field Mint: Lampsakos, Mysia Size: 18.0 mm Weight: 4.06 grams Struck in the years following Alexander the Great's death by Leonnatos, Arrhidaios, or Antigonos I Monophthalmos. This coin features a deep test cut on the reverse, the result of an ancient banker checking the bullion quality. The cut has been cleaned out allowing for visual confirmation that the coin was indeed struck in silver. Interestingly, the coin's flan is slightly concave. Whether this was the result of the initial coin strike or the test cut is unclear. A very nice Macedonian drachm, fairly priced.
